Typhoid is a disease caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria. This disease is very common and to a large extent, very deadly in underdeveloped countries and continents like Africa with statistics revealing close to 110,000 annual deaths. Typhoid, widely spread through contaminated food and water or close contact with the infected, Africa is faced with a much higher risk of potential infection as the lack of portable, clean drinking water, and the abundance of dirty environments escalates the risk of potential infection or spread of disease. 
When contracted one experiences early symptoms of high fever, headache, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, weakness fatigue muscle aches, sweating, dry cough, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
Due to the dominance of this disease, African herbalists have discovered ways of immunizing the public against these diseases. Concoctions substantially vary in many parts of Africa and West Africa. How typhoid is cured in Ghana and Nigeria will be centered.

How is it cured in Ghana?

In West Africa, specifically Ghana, a concoction of coconut roots and bamboo leaves is used to cure Typhoid and other bacterial infections. Herbal remedies mostly focus on boosting the individual's immunity to fight the disease.

Coconut roots are a very well-approved and lucrative Ghanaian medicinal herb used in different forms of concoctions in many ways. As the saying goes “ there is no part of the coconut tree you cannot use”.When used alone, can cure urinary issues, fever and diarrhea.These roots are able to perform such processes due to the presence of notable substances in the roots such as Saponins and Flavonoids. These, combined with bamboo leaves perform a whole another function of boosting immunity and performing antioxidation mechanisms in the body. The bamboo is known not only for its  good availability, and renewability, but also for its antioxidant potential. Bamboo shoots contain  tyrosine which facilitates biochemical metabolism. Bamboo also contains a huge amount of flavonoids which is one of the most efficient molecules in combating oxidative stress.These bamboo leaves in addition to the coconut roots are either boiled and consumed or grinded into powder and consumed.

 

In addition to these home made remedies, parts of Ghana, Ga municipalities, sell more professionally made typhoid concoctions to the public. These remedies are believed to work more effectively as compared to homemade recipes. These remedies contain mostly pawpaw, Morinda lucida,lime,bitter leaf and neem tree. 

How is it cured in Nigeria?

In other parts of Africa, Nigeria, a concoction made out of scent leaf, pawpaw leaves, neem tree and Morinda lucida is used to cure typhoid.Morinda is commonly referred to as Owuro in Yoruba.It is considered a key ingredient in this remedy as it possesses a wide range of biological activity such as: anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesia.

In most situations these leaves are used with aromatics; garlic, ginger, onions,lemon grass, unripe pawpaw, lime/lemon, Uda(African pepper), cloves, and West African Black pepper to further boost the capability of the remedy.
